5/13/2023 0 Comments Born standing up a comic's lifeI loved this book so much because it was everything I subconsciously wanted it to be and nothing that I expected it to be. Illustrated throughout with black and white photographs collected by Martin, this book is instantly compelling visually and a spectacularly good read. Though Martin is reticent about his personal life, he is also stunningly deft, and manages to give readers a feeling of intimacy and candor. This book is a memoir, but it is also an illuminating guidebook to stand-up from one of our two or three greatest comedians. And he writes about how he figured out what worked on stage. He writes about fear, anxiety and loneliness. He writes about mentors, girlfriends, his complex relationship with his parents and sister, and about some of his great peers in comedy-Dan Ackroyd, Lorne Michaels, Carl Riener, Johnny Carson. He writes about making the very tough decision to sacrifice everything not original in his act, and about lucking into a job writing for The Smothers Brothers Show. Obsession is a substitute for talent, he has said, and Steve Martin's focus and daring-his sheer tenacity-are truly stunning. By age 20, studying poetry and philosophy on the side, he was performing a dozen times a week, most often at the Disney rival, Knott's Berry Farm. In the decade that followed, he worked in Disney's magic shop, print shop, and theater, and developed his own magic/comedy act. Author: Steve Martin, narrated by the authorīlurb (GR): At age 10, Steve Martin got a job selling guidebooks at the newly-opened Disneyland.

And in so doing, it offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of GLBT men and women whose heretofore untold contributions helped to shape the face of contemporary Paganism. Lloyd (aka Garan Du), a Minoan high priest, co-founder of the Between the Worlds men’s gathering, and author of Bull of Heaven: The Mythic Life of Eddie Buczynski and the Rise of the New York Pagan, a book that some consider the sequel to Margot Adler's. Bringing together the threads of disparate subcultures, social movements, spiritual paths and characters, "Bull of Heaven" weaves Buczynski's life into a tapestry that encompasses the history of contemporary Paganism and the occult in New York City. In this episode of Eat My Pagan Ass, Luckylicious interviews special guest Michael G. Rejected by the Church because of his questioning mind and budding homosexuality, his feet were soon set on a different path-one that would lead from his childhood home in Ozone Park to the raucous streets of '60s Greenwich Village, through the burgeoning Neo-Pagan spiritual movement of the '70s, before depositing him into the academic realm of Classical & Near Eastern archaeology. As a teenager, Eddie Buczynski had dreamed of becoming a Jesuit Priest. 5/12/2023 0 Comments Champagne by Don KladstrupMarci became obsessed with Champagne once his friend and he took a fateful trip to the region in the mid aughts. Mostly, it’s a one-of-a-kind San Francisco destination for oenophiles with a proclivity for things bubbly and French. It’s a wine bar, a private events space, and someone’s literal apartment. For a private event with friends, the San Francisco Champagne Society sometimes charges more than $6,000 for a night of the good life. That’s because, here at this $75 Champagne tasting, one can always add on tins of caviar, Rechiutti chocolate, or a few more flutes of liquid exuberance to further heighten the already-luxurious atmosphere. “This is a rich tasting,” one guest says. Maps of the Champagne region stretch across tables while venture capitalists discuss their newest, well, ventures. People laugh about why they would or would not go to Morocco while others gossip in a private room that was once a bedroom, complete with a shower. François was kind enough to translate the entry on Mlle Maupin from Fétis's "Biographie Universelle des Musiciens". Shortly after I created my first La Maupin web page, François Velde's reference to her in his page on 17th and 18th century French opera led me to a few more details. Since encountering her there, I've sought to learn more of her. Maupin from Jessica Amanda Salmonson's introduction to her 1982 anthology Amazons II. I've spent a fair amount of time trying to chase down her story, and so I figured I'd put what I've learned about her on the Web. One of the many fascinating women who give the lie to such claims is the seventeenth century opera star, Mademoiselle Maupin. MaupinSeveral times in the year or so before I created this page, I read assertions that women in the past could not obtain training in arms or would never have dressed as men and such like. 5/12/2023 0 Comments Maddox brothers seriesTrenton Maddox was the king of Eastern State University, dating co-eds before he even graduated high school. The follow-up, The Fires of Vengeance, is one of the most highly anticipated fantasy releases of the fall, and with good reason: The Rage of Dragons was excellent, and it left off just as the story was reaching new heights of tension and intrigue.
